Defect Dark Orb Build — Multi-Cast One-Shot Boss Killer Guide

The Dark Orb build is the Defect’s boss-killing specialist. Where Lightning orbs chip for 3-6 damage per turn, a single Dark Orb accumulates 6+ damage every turn, silently stacking in the background. After 5 turns, it holds 30+ stored damage. Dualcast it for 60. Multi-Cast it for 180+. The play Pattern is unique: spend turns 1-4 playing pure defense, let your Dark Orb cook behind a Frost wall, then press the delete button and one-shot whatever boss, elite, or Transient is unfortunate enough to be on the other side.
This build focuses exclusively on the Dark + Frost synergy — a more patient, deliberate playstyle than the Lightning-focused Orb-Focus build. If you enjoy charging up a single devastating attack, this is your archetype.
Build Overview
The Dark Orb game plan: channel 1-2 Dark Orbs → place them behind Frost orbs (so they don’t get accidentally evoked) → stack Focus to accelerate charge rate → Defend passively with Frost → after 4-6 turns, Unleash with Multi-Cast or Dualcast for 150-300+ damage → boss dead in one hit.
Dark Orb One-Shot
Strategy
Channel 1-2 Dark Orbs early. Place Frost orbs in front (left side) so Dark orbs sit in the rightmost slots and aren't accidentally evoked. Stack Focus (Defragment, Biased Cognition) to accelerate Dark charge rate — each Focus adds +6 damage stored per turn per Dark orb. Defend with Frost orbs for 4-6 turns while damage accumulates. Evoke with Multi-Cast (evokes rightmost orb X times) for 150-300+ damage. Against bosses, one fully charged Dark orb + Multi-Cast ends the fight. Against multi-enemy rooms, Doom and Gloom applies AoE while charging a Dark orb.
Core Cards — The Charge and Release Engine
S-Tier: The Dark Orb Package
Darkness (Uncommon Skill, 1 energy) — Channel 1 Dark orb. The simplest and most reliable Dark generator. Takes 1 orb slot, starts accumulating 6 damage per turn (9 with 3 Focus, 12 with 6 Focus). After 4 turns with 6 Focus: 48 stored damage, Dualcast for 96, Multi-Cast X=3 for 288. This is the card that starts your win condition. Take 1-2 copies early.
Pick priority: Highest priority uncommon Skill. If you see Darkness in Act 1, you can commit to the Dark Orb build. It’s the foundational card.
Multi-Cast (Rare Skill, X energy) — Evoke your rightmost orb X times. This is the Dark Orb payoff. With 1 Dark orb charged to 50: Multi-Cast X=3 deals 150 damage. X=5 deals 250 damage. X=8 deals 400 damage. Nothing in the game survives a fully charged Multi-Cast. Take 1 copy — you only need one because the fight ends when you play it.
Pick priority: Highest priority rare. If you see Multi-Cast and already have Darkness, take it over everything. If you have Multi-Cast but no Darkness, take Multi-Cast anyway and hunt for Darkness.
Dualcast — Your starting card. Evoke your rightmost orb twice. At 0 energy, it’s a 16-damage nuke with a single Lightning orb. With a Dark orb charged to 30: 60 damage for 0 energy. Dualcast serves as your early-game Finisher until you find Multi-Cast. It never leaves your deck — it’s always useful.
Consuming Shadow (Rare Skill, 2 energy → 1 upgraded) — Channel 2 Dark orbs. Evoke your leftmost orb at the end of your turn. This is the accelerator — it fills two slots with Dark orbs immediately, and the leftmost evoke prevents your orb slots from overflowing. The leftmost evoke is usually a Frost orb (expendable) or a nearly-spent Dark orb. Take 1 copy for boss fights.
A-Tier: The Frost Wall
Glacier (Uncommon Skill, 1 energy) — Channel 2 Frost orbs, gain 10 Block (13 upgraded). The defensive backbone. Every Glacier play fills two orb slots with Frost, pushing your Dark orb to the right (safe from accidental evoke). The immediate block saves HP; the passive Frost generates block every subsequent turn. Take 2-3 copies.
Pick priority: Take over all other Frost generators. Glacier is the best defensive card in the Defect pool.
Coolheaded (Common Skill, 1 energy) — Channel 1 Frost, draw 1 card (2 upgraded). Cheap Frost generation + card draw. The draw helps you find Multi-Cast or Darkness faster. Take 1-2 copies after you have Glacier.
Cold Snap (Common Attack, 1 energy) — Deal 6 damage, channel 1 Frost. Hybrid offense/defense for Act 1. The Frost orb helps survive while you set up Dark orbs. Falls off in Act 2-3 once Glacier and Coolheaded Dominate your Frost generation.
B-Tier: The Scaling Engine
Defragment (Uncommon Power, 1 energy) — Gain 1 Focus (2 upgraded). Focus accelerates Dark orb charge rate. At 0 Focus: Dark orb charges 6/turn. At 3 Focus: 9/turn (50% faster). At 6 Focus: 12/turn (100% faster). Same total damage in half the time. Take 1-2 copies — you need less Focus than the Lightning build because one big Dark Dualcast is worth 20 Lightning passive ticks.
Biased Cognition (Rare Power, 1 energy) — Gain 4 Focus (5 upgraded), lose 1 Focus per turn. Perfect for the Dark Orb build’s timing. Play Biased Cognition on turn 3-4 when your Dark orb has 20-30 stored damage. The +4 Focus accelerates the final charge, and the Focus decay doesn’t matter because you Multi-Cast the orb 1-2 turns later. Pair with Core Surge (Artifact blocks Focus drain) for permanent +4 Focus.
Loop (Uncommon Power, 1 energy) — The first orb in your slots triggers its passive twice. Place a Dark orb in the first slot, and Loop makes it charge 12 damage per turn instead of 6. At 3 Focus: 18/turn. In 5 turns: 90 stored damage (Dualcast = 180). Loop effectively doubles your Dark charge rate for 1 energy. Take 1 copy.
C-Tier: Situational Support
Doom and Gloom (Uncommon Attack, 2 energy) — Deal 10 damage to ALL enemies, channel 1 Dark orb. Excellent in Act 1-2 — the AoE clears multi-enemy fights while the Dark orb starts scaling for the boss. Falls off in Act 3 when you have better Dark generators.
Core Surge (Rare Attack, 1 energy) — Deal 11 damage, gain 1 Artifact. The Artifact blocks Biased Cognition’s Focus drain, giving you permanent +4/+5 Focus. This combo single-handedly wins runs. Take Core Surge if you have Biased Cognition, or vice versa.
Recursion (Common Skill, 0 energy) — Evoke your next orb, then re-channel it. Use this to re-position Dark orbs: if your Dark orb is about to be evoked accidentally (because you need to channel Frost), Recursion moves it to the rightmost slot. Also doubles as a mini-Dualcast — Recursion evokes the Dark orb for its stored damage, then re-channels it to start charging again.
Cards to AVOID
- Electrodynamics: Lightning orb payoff. You’re channeling Dark and Frost, not Lightning. Skip.
- Ball Lightning: Channels Lightning, which consumes orb slots you need for Dark + Frost.
- Tempest: Channels X Lightning. Same problem.
- Thunder: Lightning evoke payoff. Wrong build.
- Static Discharge: Channels Lightning when damaged. Pollutes your orb slots.
Relic Priority
Run-Defining
- Runic Capacitor: +3 orb slots. At 6 slots, you can have 1 Dark orb + 5 Frost orbs. Or 2 Dark + 4 Frost. More slots = more room for Dark orbs to cook while Frost protects you.
- Gold-Plated Cables: Rightmost orb’s passive triggers twice. Place your Dark orb in the rightmost slot — it now charges 12/turn (18 with 3 Focus, 24 with 6 Focus). A 5-turn charge = 120 stored damage.
- Inserter: Gain +1 orb slot every 2 turns. In a 10-turn boss fight, you reach 7-8 slots. At 8 slots with 2 Dark orbs + 6 Frost: 2 Dark orbs charging for 8 turns = 200+ damage each. Overkill.
High Impact
- Symbiotic Virus: Start combat with a Dark orb channeled. Zero setup required — your Dark orb starts charging from turn 1. The single best relic for this build.
- Data Disk: Start combat with +1 Focus. Faster Dark charge + stronger Frost block.
- Emotion Chip: When damaged, gain +1 Focus for the rest of combat. Triggers 3-5 times per boss fight. Your Dark orbs charge faster the more you get hit.
Nice to Have
- Horn Cleat: 14 Block on turn 2. Buys one extra turn of Dark charge before you need to block.
- Incense Burner: Every 6 turns, gain Intangible. Time it for the boss’s big attack.
- Fossilized Helix: Prevents first HP loss each combat. Turn 1: play Darkness for free (no damage taken).
Act-by-Act Strategy
Act 1 — Secure Dark Generation
Floor 1-5 priorities:
- Darkness — Take on sight. Commit to the build.
- Cold Snap — Frost + damage. Best Act 1 pick for survival.
- Ball Lightning — Temporary damage. Pivot away later.
- Doom and Gloom — AoE + Dark orb generation.
- Glacier — Always take. Frost wall starts here.
Do NOT take Capacitor early — more orb slots without Focus or Dark orbs means more slots sitting empty.
Elite strategy:
- Sentries (Medium): Doom and Gloom AoE is premium. Darkness + patience = 40+ damage Dualcast.
- Lagavulin (Favorable): The sleep phase is PERFECT for Dark setup. Channel Darkness during sleep 1. Let it charge during sleep 2. Dualcast when it wakes — 30+ damage immediately.
- Gremlin Nob (DAngerous): Skills (Darkness, Glacier) trigger Strength gain. Bring Attacks or skip.
Act 2 — Build the Frost Wall
Priority picks:
- Glacier (all copies)
- Multi-Cast (boss Finisher)
- Loop (double Dark charge)
- Defragment (faster charge)
- Consuming Shadow (double Dark generator)
Shop priorities: Runic Capacitor, Symbiotic Virus. Remove Strikes.
Elite strategy:
- Tri-Slavers (Medium): Frost wall + one Dark orb Dualcast kills the red Slaver.
- Book of Stabbing (Hard): Frost wall MUST be online by turn 2. Glacier + Coolheaded are essential.
- Gremlin Leader (Medium): Doom and Gloom kills minions while your Dark orb charges for the Leader.
Act 3 — The One-Shot Machine
Final boss strategy:
- Time Eater (Hard): 12-card limit. Conserve cards. Play Darkness, Frost wall, wait 5 turns (passing when possible), Multi-Cast. You play ~8 cards total.
- Awakened One (Favorable): Dark orbs charge regardless of phase. 6-turn charge in phase 1 + Multi-Cast to end phase 1. Second Dark orb charges during phase 2 setup.
- Donu & Deca (Favorable): Focus Donu. Dark orb charges for 5 turns → Multi-Cast kills Donu at full HP. Deca can’t out-damage your Frost wall.
Key Tips
-
Dark orbs go on the RIGHT. Orbs evoke left-to-right. Place Frost left, Dark right. This prevents accidental Dark evokes when you channel more Frost.
-
Patience IS the strategy. The core mistake new Dark Orb players make is evoking too early. A Dark orb with 12 stored damage Dualcast for 24 is mediocre. The same orb with 60 stored damage Dualcast for 120 is game-winning. Wait.
-
Loop doubles your charge rate. Place Dark orb in slot 1 (leftmost) with Loop active. It charges 12/turn instead of 6. Pair with Gold-Plated Cables (rightmost orb doubles) for a Dark orb charging 24/turn at 6 Focus.
-
Biased Cognition + Core Surge = permanent +4 Focus. The Artifact from Core Surge blocks the Focus drain debuff. This combo is run-winning for Dark builds.
-
Energy is for block, not attacks. Spend energy on Frost generation (Glacier, Coolheaded) and Focus (Defragment, Biased Cognition). The Dark orb is your attack — it doesn’t need energy.
Dark Orb Charge Calculator
| Turns Charged | 0 Focus | 3 Focus | 6 Focus | Loop (3 Focus) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 | 9 | 12 | 18 |
| 2 | 12 | 18 | 24 | 36 |
| 3 | 18 | 27 | 36 | 54 |
| 4 | 24 | 36 | 48 | 72 |
| 5 | 30 | 45 | 60 | 90 |
| 6 | 36 | 54 | 72 | 108 |
Multi-Cast X=3 at 6 turns with 6 Focus + Loop: 108 × 3 = 324 damage. Nothing survives.
Matchup Guide
Favorable: Hexaghost (predictable Inferno Pattern = perfect setup timing), The Champ (setup during buff phase, execute after 50% threshold), Lagavulin (sleep phases = free charge turns), Awakened One (charges through phases), Giant Head (you out-scale its slow ramp)
Unfavorable: Time Eater (card limit restricts setup), Reptomancer (exploding daggers require immediate response, not 4-turn charge), multi-enemy hallway fights (Dark is single-target)
Nemesis: Nemesis (the elite). Intangible every other turn means your 300-damage Multi-Cast hits for… 1. Time your evoke for non-Intangible turns. Bring Doom and Gloom for chip damage on Intangible turns.
